AbstractAortic baroreceptor function was studied in hypertensive rabbits induced by experimental hyperthyroidism. Hypertension was produced by four weeks treatment of dessicated thyroid (0.5g/day). In the seven hypertensive rabbits, elevated arterial blood pressure and increased heart rate were observed. Their mean arterial pressure (146.0 ± 2.4mmHg) and heart rate (366.6 ± 10.3baets/min) were higher than the corresponding values in seven control normotensive rabbits. A multifiber preparation of the aortic nerve was used to analyze the baroreceptor firing range. Upward shift of the baroreceptor range of baroreceptor activation was observed in hypertensive rabbits. The average systolic/diastolic pressure threshold for baroreceptor activation in the control rabbits was 64.0 ± 3.7 / 35.0 ± 2.1mmHg, while that of hypertensive rabbits was 11.09 ± 4.4 / 74.0 ± 3.5mmHg. These findings demonstrate that aortic baroreceptor activities in the hypertensive rabbits induced by experimental hyperthyroidism reset to a higher blood pressure.
