Abstract | In 8 mongrel dogs, halothane and sevoflurane were administered during constant ventilation, increasing inspired concentration stepwise from 0 to 0.7, 1.4 and 2.1 MAC to examine the effect of changes in cardiac output (CO) and oxygen consumption (VO2) on arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) and also to make comparisons between the two anesthetics. With each increase in inspired concentration of halothane and sevoflurane, CO, VO2 and PaCO2 all decreased. Significant correlation and significant regression line were observed in both halothane and sevoflurane between volume of change in CO (ΔCO) and volume of change in PaCO2 (ΔPaCO2) and between volume of change in VO2 (ΔVO2) and ΔPaCO2. However, closeness in relationship between ΔCO and ΔPaCO2 was greater than that between ΔVO2 and ΔPaCO2. In comparisons between halothane and sevoflurane, no significant differences were seen in CO, VO2 or PaCO2. Nor were there observed any large differences in correlation coefficient or in regression equation between ΔCO and ΔPaCO2 and between ΔVO2 and ΔPaCO2. From the above, changes in PaCO2 resulting from changes in depth of halothane and sevoflurane anesthesia are considered to be more dependent on changes in CO than changes in VO2. |
